The philosopher Blaise Pascal said; “There is a God-shaped vacuum in the heart of every person, and it can never be filled by any created thing. It can only be filled by God, made known through Jesus Christ.” The longer I live the more I agree with Pascal. The great task of our spiritual journey is to fill that void with the things of the spirit.
There are a number of substitutes for the Spirit of God in our lives. Things such as work, pleasure and money often make a vain attempt to fill the void. We must make a conscious effort to align ourselves with the intentions of God. Mr. Wesley suggested the practice of the Means of Grace to fill our void. They are: prayer, fasting, reading Sacred Scripture, the Sacraments, worship, community and healthy living. A concerted effort to live by these suggestions will do much to fill the emptiness of our lives.
