“If there is anywhere on earth a lover of God who is always kept safe, I know
nothing of it, for it was not shown to me. But this was shown: that in falling and rising again we are always kept in that same precious love.”
― Julian of Norwich
Think about the words of Julian as you go through the normal ups and downs of life.
‘Like’ is not enough – I love Julian of Norwich. I first heard her words when I was a teenager. Years later someone gave me a book of her writing. It was at one of the worst times of my life. I was going through some awful, terrible stuff. Julian’s words were part of my healing. They are so honest and heartfelt – I read the words and realised ‘here is Truth’. Julian helped me learn that God loves each one of us in all circumstances, through all things, that His love is constant and changeless and… that ‘love’ is too puny a word for what God offers to us.
If you’re ever visiting England, you can visit the site of Julian’s cell. I stayed next door in a little Guest House run by a very lovely Anglican nun. My bedroom window overlooked Julian’s cell. Also, if you’re ever visiting England, a hundred or so miles north west is the home of the Wesleys (you can visit their house and their father’s church), and a little way south of that is where the separatists first got together – some of whom later sailed on the Mayflower.
One of my favorite quotations from Mother Julian. Later this month I’ll have the great joy of returning to Norwich for the first time in 30 years. Glyn and I, both oblates of the Order of Julian of Norwich, will be staying at All Hallows guest house. We’ll say hi to Sr. Pamela for you, Sandy!
