Wise Become Foolish

The 40 Days of Lent

Day Seventeen

Do not deceive yourselves. If you think that you are wise in this age, you should become fools so that you may become wise. For the wisdom of this world is foolishness with God. For it is written,

‘He catches the wise in their craftiness’,

and again,

‘The Lord knows the thoughts of the wise,

that they are futile.’

~~~1 Corinthians 3:18-20

Lord, Many of us spend a great deal of time trying to fool ourselves about our behavior. We submit ourselves to you and ask that you show us the way we must go. Grant us the grace to move forward and live a life that is wise and true and brings glory to you.

Declare the Glory

The 40 Days of Lent

Day Sixteen

The heavens are telling the glory of God;

and the firmament proclaims his handiwork.

Day to day pours forth speech,

and night to night declares knowledge.

There is no speech, nor are there words;

their voice is not heard;

yet their voice goes out through all the earth,

and their words to the end of the world.

~~~Psalm 19:1-4

Lord, You are the light of the world. You have promised to bring light into our darkened world, and we claim that promise this day. Let your light shine brightly in all the places of our lives so that me may rejoice in your glory.

‘Now when forty years had passed, an angel appeared to him in the wilderness of Mount Sinai, in the flame of a burning bush. When Moses saw it, he was amazed at the sight; and as he approached to look, there came the voice of the Lord: “I am the God of your ancestors, the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.” Moses began to tremble and did not dare to look. Then the Lord said to him, “Take off the sandals from your feet, for the place where you are standing is holy ground.

The Living Stone

The 40 Days of Lent

Day Fourteen

Come to him, a living stone, though rejected by mortals yet chosen and precious in God’s sight, and like living stones, let yourselves be built into a spiritual house, to be a holy priesthood, to offer spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ.

~~~1 Peter 2:4-5

Lord, Open my eyes so that I may see beyond my mortal nature. Help me to recognize the works of the living stone in this world. The living stone goes places and does things I could never do. My Lenten prayer is that I can recognize the living stone in the affairs of the world.

What is Faith?

The 40 Days of Lent

Day Twelve

Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen. Indeed, by faith our ancestors received approval. By faith we understand that the worlds were prepared by the word of God, so that what is seen was made from things that are not visible.

~~~Hebrews 11:1-3

Lord, Faith is an elusive idea. It is the reason we believe and hope in things we have not seen. It is what gives us the strength to continue when all that we know tells us to stop. Our faith is the center of our journey with you. Please strengthen us this day through your spirit that dwells within us.

Day Eleven

O give thanks to the Lord, call on his name,

make known his deeds among the peoples.

Sing to him, sing praises to him;

tell of all his wonderful works.

Glory in his holy name;

let the hearts of those who seek the Lord rejoice.

Lord, We thank you for your presence with us every day. We praise you for the gifts you give us. We worship and sing with joy because you are our Creator and God. We enjoy with our eyes the wonders that surround us. May we keep this attitude throughout this day.

You Are the CHRIST

Day Ten

Jesus went on with his disciples to the villages of Caesarea Philippi; and on the way he asked his disciples, ‘Who do people say that I am?’ And they answered him, ‘John the Baptist; and others, Elijah; and still others, one of the prophets.’ He asked them, ‘But who do you say that I am?’ Peter answered him, ‘You are the Messiah.’

Lord, The most powerful words that anyone can say are You are the Christ, the savior, the messiah. We know that you have come to give us a life that we cannot picture or imagine. Let your Lordship take root in our live so that we may enjoy the victory that you offer. YOU ARE THE CHRIST.

Justified by Grace

The 40 Days of Lent

Day Nine

What then are we to say was gained by Abraham, our ancestor according to the flesh? For if Abraham was justified by works, he has something to boast about, but not before God. For what does the scripture say? ‘Abraham believed God, and it was reckoned to him as righteousness.’ Now to one who works, wages are not reckoned as a gift but as something due.

~~~Romans 4:1-4

Lord, I know that my works can never save me, but why do I work so hard. Teach me to have faith and trust in your grace. Give me the freedom to be able to trust you more than I trust myself. That trust is what I seek this day.

Your Shield

Day Eight

After these things the word of the Lord came to Abram in a vision, ‘Do not be afraid, Abram, I am your shield; your reward shall be very great.’

~~~Genesis 15:1

Lord, A shield is particularly important to the vulnerable. We acknowledge our vulnerability to the many obstacles that life sets before us, and we recognize your ability to remove them. Please stand as our mighty shield as we travel our life journey. With you as our shield, we have victory.
