The 40 Days of Lent

Day Seven

Then Jesus was led up by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil. He fasted for forty days and forty nights, and afterwards he was famished. The tempter came and said to him, ‘If you are the Son of God, command these stones to become loaves of bread.’ But he answered, ‘It is written,

“One does not live by bread alone,

but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.”

~~~Matthew 4:1-41

Lord, We live in a world that tells us that we live by bread alone, but you tell us different. Inspire us during this Lenten season to discern that different path. Let us be guided by your spirit in the direction that you have set out for all of your creation. Strengthen us as we seek that direction.

Called to Compassion

The 40 Days of Lent

Day Six

Finally, all of you, have unity of spirit, sympathy, love for one another, a tender heart, and a humble mind. Do not repay evil for evil or abuse for abuse; but, on the contrary, repay with a blessing. It is for this that you were called—that you might inherit a blessing.

Lord, Compassion is an extremely popular word. There is something inside of each of us that wants to be compassionate with everyone we encounter. There is, however, another voice. That voice says that we must set things right. That voice says that compassion is a sign of weakness. Help me to practice the compassion that you have taught so that we may follow you..

The 40 Days of Lent

Day Five

For by grace you have been saved through faith, and this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God— not the result of works, so that no one may boast.

~~~Ephesians 2:8-9

Lord, Salvation by faith is both simple and hard. We were all born with a streak of defiance in us. That defiance sometimes makes it difficult to turn ourselves over to you in faith. It is also exceedingly challenging to have faith in what we have not seen. Lord give us the strength to be faithful this day and all days to come.

Hiding Place

The 40 Days of Lent

Day Four

You are a hiding-place for me;

you preserve me from trouble;

~~~Psalm 32:7

Lord, We all need a hiding place to escape our troubles. The world offers places that only deepen and widen our trouble, but you offer peace and grace. Let me open my eyes and see what you have offered to me and accept it. Lord, I accept that you are the true hiding place in my times of trouble.

Be Ready

The 40 Days of Lent

Day Three

In the presence of God and of Christ Jesus, who is to judge the living and the dead, and in view of his appearing and his kingdom, I solemnly urge you: proclaim the message; be persistent whether the time is favorable or unfavorable; convince, rebuke, and encourage, with the utmost patience in teaching.

~~~2 Timothy 4:1-2

Lord, Prepare us for the day that I will be judged by my deeds. Give me the grace necessary to live as my belief requires. I ask forgiveness in the many ways that I have failed to live up to that which I profess. It is in your love and grace that I implore you this day

Shame

The 40 Days of Lent

Day Two

To you, O Lord, I lift up my soul.

O my God, in you I trust;

do not let me be put to shame;

do not let my enemies exult over me.

Do not let those who wait for you be put to shame;

let them be ashamed who are wantonly treacherous.

~~~Psalm 25

Lord, We all fear shame in our lives. Shame can cause us to make many mistakes. Lord, I confess my sins and ask you to remove my shame. Renew me in the bosom of your love and grace. Help me to find a way forward in difficult times. I know that you are gracious and merciful and can make this happen.

Proper Piety

The 40 Days of Lent

Day One

‘Beware of practising your piety before others in order to be seen by them; for the you have no reward from your Father in heaven.

‘So whenever you give alms, do not sound a trumpet before you, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, so that they may be praised by others. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward. But when you give alms, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, so that your alms may be done in secret; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you.

‘And whenever you pray, do not be like the hypocrites; for they love to stand and pray in the synagogues and at the street corners, so that they may be seen by others. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward. But whenever you pray, go into your room and shut the door and pray to your Father who is in secret; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you.

~~~Matthew 6:1-6

Lord, Help me to practice my Lenten disciplines with the attitude and demeanor that is given to us by Jesus. Too often we are tempted to be showy and self-aggrandizing in our piety. It is clear, from the words of Jesus, that we are to be people of humble heart and giving spirit. I ask your help and strength to achieve that during this Lenten season.
