Keep Your Face to the Light

Don’t you love to be around cheerful people? You know – the kind of person who walks into a room and fills it with a certain light of gladness. The kind of person whose bright disposition chases away the dreariness of the day and lends an infusion of happiness to the room. The kind of person that inevitably makes you stop what you are doing and smile. There is nothing artificial about this person. The pure joy of his soul just bubbles to the surface and infects everyone around him. Cheerfulness is a natural for him!

supreme happiness

I recently saw a TV interview with a man who had been cruelly blinded by a random act of violence. Pure delight with life made his face glow. His statement was this: “When I was blinded, I had a choice to make. I could be bitter, feel cheated, and bring misery into the lives of others; or I could be cheerful, glad to be alive, and bring encouragement into the lives of others. I chose to be cheerful.”

A close friend was struck down over a year ago with a massive stroke that left him without speech or any movement on his right side. When he awoke form the coma, Luke made a decision, too. He chose to be cheerful. The contentment of his soul makes its way to his face. You can see it there in his radiant smile and bright eyes. If you visit Luke, he makes sure you feel better because you came.

Cheerfulness is a state of mind and heart. It is the result of a mind of peace and heart of contentment. It has nothing to do with outward circumstances and is not contingent on any of life’s situations. Cheerfulness is a willingness to choose joy.

People who bring cheer into this world have chosen to look at the light, not at the darkness. Their lives are not free from trouble or pain, they have just decided that darkness will not overcome them.

Today, choose to be cheerful. Dispel the darkness, and set out to bring joy and laughter to all around you. Have a peaceful mind and a truly contented heart, and allow your face to mirror that. Decide that other people and outward circumstances can not take your joy away. Jesus said, “In this world, you will have trouble, but be of good cheer! I have overcome the world!” (John 16:33)

Make sure that seeing you makes the day brighter for others. Leave them better than you found them. Let your smiles be contagious and your happiness be genuine. KEEP YOUR FACE TO THE LIGHT!

“I AM THE LIGHT OF THE WORLD!” – Jesus

PRAYER: Father – Let me be a source of gladness and light to all around me.

Encourage Someone

Luke tells us of the apostle Paul, “When he had gone through those regions and had given the believers much encouragement.” Acts 20:2. It seems that the real calling of a Christian is to be an encourager. The question arises-How can you encourage someone?

Let me offer a few suggestions:

  • Write someone a handwritten note of just plain appreciation for just being your friend.

  • Call someone early in the morning and tell them something positive but true to start their day. (what a great pick up for the day)

  • Write someone a prayer note.

  • Smile at the waitress, cashier, stranger….

  • Take someone out to lunch ( that means you pay).

  • Allow merging traffic to merge!!

  • Buy flowers or candy for your wife, husband, partner, girlfriend or child.

Let’s all make this week the week we are intentional and missional about being encouragers. You can and will make a difference.

Do Something

The prophet tells us: “And the crowds asked him, “What then should we do?” In reply he said to them, “Whoever has two coats must share

with anyone who has none; and whoever has food must do likewise.” (Luke 3:10-11) The crowd was speaking to John the Baptist about how they would live the Missional life. They were confused and waiting for the Rabbis to tell them what to do. Perhaps Synagogue’s Missions Committee would set up a program so that they could “plug in”. Instead John said: JUST DO IT!

What should we do? Do as the prophet said two thousand years ago. Share as you go, give your personal property away to those who are in need, live a life of simply caring about others. Caring becomes a way of life and the first thing you know it will be better to give than to receive.

 OK, some action suggestions:

  • Give something of your own to a person in need.
  • Give food or help to a homeless person (it doesn’t matter WHY they are homeless).
  • Give a smile or a kind word to a stranger.
  • Pick up some trash in your neighborhood–just because.
  • Volunteer at a park, zoo or hospital.
  • Become a mentor for a child.

These are just a few ways that you can just do something Missional as you journey.

The message -DON’T WAIT- just do it!

Passing Through

Luke 4: 16-30

Corcovado jesus

Jesus went home. After ministering in Galilee he decided to go back to Nazareth, to reconnect with those who had known him as a little boy, to visit his mom, to speak at the synagogue that he knew like the back of his hand. At the synagogue, he spoke about his mission. The locals were at first offended and then enraged. They took him to the cliff which marked the edge of town with plans to throw him off. Then the miracle happened. Scripture says, “But he passed through the midst of them and went on his way.” One man in an angry mob and “he passed through the midst of them!” He did not call for help or fight his way clear. He just passed through them.
When we think of Jesus’ miracles we consider events like healings, resurrections, calming the sea, walking on water, or turning water into wine. We never see this miracle listed, but I see it as an incredible moment that relates to our journeys so often. How many times have you walked through frightening, dangerous, heartbreaking situations and gone on to live out your life? How many times have you not been able to explain how you did it, how you made it through? How many times have you weathered opposition and hostility and continued to live victoriously? How many times has your broken heart healed? How many times has your mind been calmed by an unexplainable peace? How many times has your soul been restored? How many times have you been at the edge of the cliff sure you were going over, when some Presence led you through the fear and pain and hurt and death? Each of those times was a miracle.

Jesus knows all about standing at the cliff’s edge with other situations or people pushing you over. He knows what it is like to look down at a chasm of hopelessness and despair. He understands the pounding of your heart, the wrenching of your gut, the tears of your hurt. He reaches out his hand and leads you as you pass through the midst of them and go on your way to love and serve Him.

Reflection – What has Christ helped you pass through?

Jesus is in the Room — Luke 24:36-53

The baby born in Bethlehem came to die. His miraculous birth and his miraculous death and resurrection were eternally linked.  The crucifixion was shattering to his disciples.  They were lost without the Master and confused about the validity of their faith and the future of the Kingdom they had just begun to envision.  Nothing made sense anymore, and they were consumed by loss.  The desperation in the room had taken on a life of its own.  So, the disciples sat huddled in darkness and fear.

Suddenly, Jesus was in the room!  In that one miraculous moment, with His resurrected presence, everything changed.  Prophecies fulfilled.  Parables lived.  Mysteries cleared.  Fear melted away.  Hope soared.  Peace settled.  Courage took hold.

Over the years of my life, I have known the presence of Jesus.  I have known, without one shadow of doubt, when He was in the room.  He has calmed my fears in anxious moments.  He has given me hope in times of my deepest despair.  He has provided for me a peace that defies understanding in the midst of great turmoil.  He has shown me grace in my most unworthy actions.  He has blessed me with healing in devastating brokenness.

So many things happen to us in life.  We must handle both joy and sorrow on this journey.  Broken family relationships, sickness, death, financial crises thrust us into situations where we, much like those early disciples, seem paralyzed and huddled in darkness and fear.  The great thing one must remember and acknowledge is that His presence will be ever with us to heal and comfort and bless us with His grace and peace.  His resurrected Presence gives meaning to the journey – Jesus is in the room.

Reflection – When have you known that Jesus was in the room?
